I've travelled in Gansu and Xinjiang, and loved the area. However, I've never met anyone who's taught there. Are there any posters with first hand experience? What were your impressions?

My friends are living in Urumqi, so let's make it second hand experience. The pay is lower there, but the life is much cheaper than anywhere else in China. Salary would be around 3-4,000, but usually schools provide good accomodation and pays for your house bills, you can have meals in school and internet hooked up at your place. You said you travelled to Xingjian, then you saw how poor the province is. That's the main reason why they don't really pay high salaries. I haven't heard about much of schools willing to have foreing teachers, but if you are really concerned, I can ask Smile

No plans to work there, but if I was younger and commitment free I'd certainly think about it as an adventure: it's very different to the rest of the country. There's handful of jobs advertised in each province.

Some places have curfews due to ethnic tensions. Your email account will no doubt more often be tampered with.
And, before you are allowed to move house to Xinjiang you are going to be thoroughly vetted.

Since my email is either hotmail or canada.com, I don't see how they could tamper with it. With the amount of time our Internet connection was down, I doubt they have the ability to intercept it.

I did often hear background noise on my calls back home. Since I don't report to the CIA or even CSIS, I doubt they found anything subversive even if they were listening in. Wink
