Expect a not great salary.
Expect to work (training) one Saturday a month.
Contract forbids teachers to smoke, drink anywhere, anytime.
Expect to be taken to yearly retreat where everyone undergoes fundamentalist Christian indoctrination. (This includes teachers waving their arms and swooping around as the "holy spirit" makes them soar like eagles)
Enough said |

I had previously heard this from someone else but I thought it too fantastical to be true. |

I almost forgot:
Weekly meeting with your faculty prayer circle to read from the bible, discuss your sins, and how you can be a better Christian. |

They're definitely Christian schools but the high school offers the International Baccalaureate Organisation diploma.

| All sounds a lot like Sekolah Pelita Harapan - is there a link, other than the Fundamentalist Christian thing? |

These opinions are completely biased and not on target. Let me set the record straight.
"Expect a not great salary."
- This school pays the second highest in the city. You cannot expect to make the same in Surabaya as you can in Jakarta. The salary is great and they give you housing (or a stipend) and a motorcycle for transportation, not to mention a food allowance and insurance. You also have a lot of vacation time in addition to the normal school holidays. You forgot that part.
"Expect to work (training) one Saturday a month."
-Most LEGIT international schools I know require some sort of training to better equip their teachers. I think this is a good thing, a do most teachers who actually care about the students.
"Contract forbids teachers to smoke, drink anywhere, anytime."
-I am looking at my contract as I type this and this is just not true. This is a Christian school, so they don't want teachers who come in to work smelling of alcohol and cigarettes (like at most English centers where many teachers smell of smoke and alcohol).
"Expect a yearly retreat..."
-There is a yearly retreat. This is a Christian school with a solid doctrine of an importance to have faith in God. You do not "undergo a fundamentalist Christian indoctrination." Teachers are ADULTS who have already made decisions about religion in their lives. This is a CHRISTIAN school...they do the same thing at MUSLIM or ANY OTHER religious school.
I have attended this retreat. Who am I to judge other people by their actions? I assure you that the MAJORITY of teachers were not moved to the point of "waving their arms and swooping around". You must realize that some Indonesian Christians are MUCH more charismatic than we are used to in the west.
"Weekly meeting..."
-There is a weekly faculty meeting where we discuss school problems, concerns and events. We do pray for the students (GASP!) and read from the BIBLE (GASP!) at this CHRISTIAN school.
Please stop trashing this well established, internationally renowned school.
It is one of the FEW in this nation that has an IB diploma. This is one of the best schools, hands down, in Surabaya (the second largest city in Indonesia).
Please respond! |
