Hey folks! This isn't teaching related, but I hope that's okay. I've searched around, but didn't find a whole lot of answers, and I'm hoping some of you have dealt with this issue. I'm a newbie at all these travel shenanigans, and could use some clarification/recommendations about travel insurance. I'm looking for something that covers me while I'm out of country for a year, but STILL covers me when I return to Canada at the end of my teaching year, or in the event of returning for a visit. I only want one insurance plan for the year. Do you know of any such plans? Are there some that should be avoided? Are there any "fine print/invisible ink clauses" a newbie should be on guard for? You might want to try Blue Cross, its known as a short term travel insurance. What I did when I travelled was to use blue cross for a two month period and then registered with a plan in the country I went to when I got there.

Also, you'll want to be certain that you have legal working/living arrangements wherever you are. Any accident, injury, or illness that you incur is unlikely to be covered if you were living or working illegally.

Yup, I'll be legal. Good FYI though, Spiral, would hate for anyone to find themselves in that situation due to lack of awareness. The position I'm taking actually provides insurance in their country, but I also need coverage for the trip over and when I travel at Christmas, and the first little while back in Canada. Symphany, I appreciate the Blue Cross suggestion. I'll need to see what they offer beyond two month coverage.

When you say you will be out of Canada for a year do you mean every day of the year?
Because I discovered that if I am present in Ontario for 153 days I am eligible for OHIP. There is a certain amount of time you have to be gone for before you are not covered. You will possibly be covered for the first academic year you are gone, depending on the dates etc.

I seem to remember that BUPA had an international plan. That was from the UK.
