Hi,
I am a recent college graduate with a BA in philosophy and no ESL certifications. I am hopefully headed out to Thailand in January or February (2009), where I intend to get certified and find a job. I was wondering, I am obviously new to this and thus weary of signing a 1 year contract. It just seems like a long time to commit before I even know if it's something I like and am good at (in a country I have never been to before). Does anyone know if schools will allow teachers to start out on a 6 month contract (or something short-term)? Also, what are my prospects of finding a job at the beginning of the year? Or even, what are my prospects of finding a job period? For those who were certified in Thailand, what would you recommend for me to do (Unfortunately, as a recent graduate, I am on a limited budget, so I do need to take that into account).
Any information will be helpful. Thanks! |

You are coming at the end of the second semester for government schools. Feb. is the last month for classes and final exams. March is mostly administrative stuff. New semester begins in mid to late May. It's possible a school could hire you for the next school year, but generally don't think that for ahead. After Songkran is the busy hiring time.
If you just want a six month contract, language schools may be a good bet, esp. part time work. One year is really not that long though. It will be over before you know it. |

^Agreed.
For that short of a contract, a language school is the way to go. |
