I'm committed to testing out a new career - I believe it'll be my fourth. I'm 62 yo, with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, an MA in Mass Communications and many years as a successful businessperson and consultant to organizations focused on leadership and organizational development. I'm going to be taking my TESOL certification in Thailand in December.
Based on what I know at present, my greatest interest is teaching adults, either in a business or a university setting. SE Asia (China, Vietnam, Thailand) or Turkey are particularly appealing.
I would genuinely welcome any advice you might have regards either the prospects for teaching "business people" or particular opportunities/challenges for "mature" Americans.
I am definitely not looking to retire.
Many Thanks! |

You won't be teaching "business people", at least not unless you have been in country for a while, and have built up your own clients base.
Most of us come here with unreal expectations about teaching at a high level. You will probably teach to much lower level students. Oral English is not always well respected academically. But then , academics are often not well respected academically. It can certainly be worthwhile, especially if you enjoy interacting with your students.
Please help us "fulltime career teachers" and demand a good wage. Sometimes retired folk come over, and think, I don't really need the money, so slary is not important" This makes it harder on us, and more likely the school will hire cheap teachers instead of good teachers |
