Guys -- without wishing to sound like I am asking the bl**dy obvious -- what do you typically avoid in class with your students at HCT? I have taught Muslims for around 15 years -- but never in the ME/Gulf, rather in mixed culture classes, which as we know, can be a quite different ball game.
Obviously -- and it goes with without saying -- any references even vaguely controversially connected to politics/religion/relationships etc would be side stepped I'd imagine!
How does it affect your teaching -- if at all? Id imagine its plain common sense what to avoid in regards to reading materials/video materials etc but itd be good to hear your points of view/experiences.

Red,
Yeah--I'll confirm everything you suggest about political discourse. Also try to sidestep discussions about movies, music and dogs. Focus on football and cars. |
