Yes, but what did he do that resulted in such an attack. People dont get shot (in their hotel room no less) three times in the head "just because". And while he was in a tourist area, and on a tourist visa, that doesnt make him a tourist. |

Yes, there is certainly more to this story but one thing is certain; it was not a random robbery. The other foreigner in the hotel room was not killed. The Canadian press needed another story to grasp onto and run with about evil old Mexico, so it will be interesting to see how they make out with this one. |

Do you think Canada is worried about slowly losing its population to Mexico? Hence the anti-Mexico press sentiment. |

The news always sensationlizes these things. Fear and irrational thought are often the result. What they don't stop to think about is that on that same day, someone was murdered in Winnipeg. I guess the government should put a travel advisory for Mexico and Winnipeg too.
Dixie, you're totally right about there being more to the story. Yes, there are random acts of violence that occur in every country, but people don't just randomly get shot in the head 3 times. I wish they'd get all the facts before they print a story like that. |

Wow, you Canucks really hate Mexico, don't you?

No, I don't think that's it. This is just my opinion. We Canadians tend to be arrogant about our country and how well it watches out for us (free medical, free or heavily discounted meds for those of lower income, daycare paid, grants, loans, welfare assistance, medical disability when one feels unable to work, and the list goes on). Maternity leave is over a year long now with paycheques rolling in from the Government, and your job has to be held open for your return. Too bad the weather's so inclimate. The Government hasn't figured out to fix that for us yet.
One thing I know for sure though is that I find it embarrassing to watch from the outside when a Canadian gets in trouble in Mexico and then discovers that, heaven forbid, Canada is unable to bail their butts out of the self-made fiasco. This all seems overlooked in the hysterical reporting that follows. |

I was upset when I read this story also. Regardless of what really happened, I resent the way the media automatically lists every Canadian killed for years in this country, without attempting to compare that to Canadians killed at home or in US cities (or wherever). They don't have any info about the story so they regurgitate what they've printed before. Meanwhile, I get emails from people at home asking if I'm ok.
