I might be leaving for Mexico City soon; maybe on a whim, like tomorrow, maybe in a couple months and would like to stay for 6 months or so if I like it. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice and answer a few of my questions.

Heres my situation, Im a filmmaker who is currently focusing on writing, but Im not getting any writing done here and feel I need a drastic change. I thought Mexico would be good since I speak a tiny bit of Spanish and always wanted to get good at it. I have about 5k saved up and would like to head down to mexico and see what its like and maybe get a job teaching English if necessary (I am interested in TESL as a second choice to filmmaking). I have my B.A. and have tutored English and Math in the US. I would actually like to work as little as possible giving me more time to write and explore. Id be willing to have my bankroll slightly eaten into, 2k over 6 months would be tolerable, but I need to keep some maneuvering money. Im most interested in Mexico City. Here are some of my specific questions.

How much can I expect to make, and how many hours should I expect to work?

Do schools make you sign a year contract, and are there shorter contracts availabe?

How much is rent, and can someone give me a general budget for living costs?

Im in Socal, can I just get in my car and drive down there or do I need to get some kind of permits to do that? Also is a car necessary there? Hows the public transportation?

Do they have poker rooms there, because I might be able to make a living playing poker if thats the case?

I have about $350 a month student loan payments, is this feasible on a teachers salary?

Thats it for now, thanks for any advice.

Even though the search function on this forum isn't the greatest, you should be able to find answers to some of your questions simply by reading the archives. For example, here are some recent and older car threads:

If you can figure out how to send home $350/month to cover student loans, use up no more than 2k from your savings, drive down in your car, and work few hours, let me know your secret! Smile

Public transportation is great here, leave the car, the expense, and the hassle at home.

I would suggest renting out a room, rather than your own place as that should really help you reduce your monthly rent payments.

If you dont want to use up your savings while here, then no, youre not likely going to make enough (esp. considering the few hours you wish to work) to send home $350 for your student loan.

General living costs depend on what you eat, what you like to do, and how you will be travelling.

Metro is 2 pesos.
Pesero is an average of 3 (less if you go a shorter distance, more if you go furthar).
Taxis can be anywhere from 10pesos to 100+ (again, depending on how far you take them - although the metro and peseros can do the job; just takes a little longer).

I have no idea what it costs to buy meat, and cook it yourself. Tacos from the street are likely to run you 8-12 pesos (I think)

Fruit, and veggies are cheaper than home, but of course vary in price depending on type, location, and season. I can buy all my salad fixings for about 40 pesos (and of course, that makes more than one salad!)

Hope that helps get your started.

As I understand it, all kind of casino-type activity is illegal in Mexico, but if you ask the right people, I'm sure that you can find fellow enthusiasts who would be willing to relieve you of a few pesitos. Very Happy
