Hey,

I haven't been able to find a decent post on what really are your "options" in Hong Kong. I am a recent university graduate looking to get out of the country and also get some work experience, preferably in ESL. I am interested in a few countries in particular (Japan, China, Italy) and I'd appreciate it if you'd help me out a bit with any of my questions.

>What is the overall "scene" in Hong Kong? How is the pay, the stress, and so on? Do you need to be a super excited, fun, crazy guy like in Japan?

>How is the racism? I imagine it woud be less severe in Hong Kong because of the fact the city has been Chinese for about 10 years?

>How does the whole Communist rule thing affect your daily experience, if at all?

>Where are the best places to start this process?

Thanks

The communist video-gaming culture can be a bit much.

I haven't lived in Hong Kong for about 8 years, but it doesn't seem all that much has changed since then from the visits I've had.

Pay depends on if you get into the government sponsored NET program or a cushy job at private/international school or if you work at a tutoring center. The tutoring centers and private kindergartens don't pay that much compared to living expenses. You can still make out alright, but you'll have little money left over at the end of the month and won't be able to afford a super fun lifestyle.

Don't be fooled. It's always been Chinese. The British may have ruled there, but HK people were always more Chinese than British.

Generally, you won't experience much negative racism in HK in public if you are white or Chinese with perfect Cantonese. Blacks will face racism, as will anyone who looks like they're from the Philippines.

However, you will be an outsider and at times you will definitely feel it.

I seriously doubt you'll notice that in day to day activities. I only lived there for about 1 year's time after the Communist takeover, but in that time I experienced nothing and nothing I noticed on visits back to HK that would make it's a factor at all.

Lots of good leads there.
