I've got 7 years experience teaching ESL in the States, Thailand and Korea (I have a BA and a CELTA) but my particular area of expertise is TOEFL. I've been teaching it for 4 years now (along with other ESL courses). I'm on my way to VN, probably HCMC, and I'd love to continue teaching TOEFL. Any recommendations would be helpful? Does teaching TOEFL pay more than regular ESL classes?

In my experience TOEFL pays the same as General English.

A lot of teachers teach both TOEFL and General English.

However, in the last couple of years, a native speaker has not been essential for TOEFL as much as they were in the past.

Vietnamese teachers that teach TOEFL are very good in my opinion and their lower wages allow for lower tuition for students. I like teaching TOEFL. In the past the native speaker was needed and wanted to teach it, but now some language schools and universities only have Vietnamese teachers teaching it.

All of the Listening, Reading Comp, Grammar, and Writing is largely taught by the locals.

The TOEFL market has matured.

I also used to teach all TOEIC classes. Then, I had to split the class with a local. Now locals are the ones that teach TOEIC, because a native speaker isn't really needed at many schools.

I think some schools in HCMC are the exception to the rule, and are on the upper end, on the tuition scale.

MOD EDIT

Rico,
To answer your question, in my experience TOEFL and other exam prep classes DO pay more than General English Classes. Also if you were to teach private students, generally teachers can charge a little more for exam prep as well. In my opinion with your creds you could easily get a job at a few different places teaching TOEFL exam prep. I believe that (not 100% sure) Apollo, ILA, Brittish Council, offer exam prep classes. I'm sure that there are other schools as well.
