Bonsoir

After interviews I have been lucky (or unlucky) enough to have been offered a job by both Shane and ECC. The thing is for me to be realistically teaching in Japan by September I'll have to decide soon, probably in the next 37 minutes.

I know that Shane gets quite a bad rap from a lot of people, but I was wondering if anyone on here has spent time teaching for both companies and if Shane really are THAT bad (compared to ECC)?

The only sticking point is that Shane are based around Tokyo (which would be lovely stuff), ECC I know are centred on Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo, but I'm worried that as a teaching virgin they'll stick me up on hill in the middlle of nowhere, with a book of shakespeare and a wonky fishing rod.

Any help in deciding would be most appreciated.

Well, you'd end up more well-rounded than a lot of the people that get placed in Tokyo right off the bat.

Well let's say that Shane are as bad as they are reported to be, it won't matter where you get placed, your life will suck. A (comparatively) good employer in a dull location is infinitely more preferable to a bad employer in paradise.

Have a look at the first post of the recent "Truth about Working for Shane" thread. It is a very fair account, in my opinion.

I personally didn't find them bad. I've never worked for ECC, so I can't compare the two.

Go with ECC. ECC is located IN the cities you mentioned, so need for worms and tackle.

Also you decide where to live (unless you take their housing for the first 3 month), so it`s up to you where exactly you'll be.

ECC treats their employees fairly well.

ECC - it's much more professional than Nova (R.I.P.), Berlitz, Shane, Gaba, Geos, etc.

ECC might be the last great standing eikaiwa in Japan!

ECC!

Well I've decided to go with ECC. They seem to get a good write up. I should be starting sometime in September and they've told me that there'll be no need for a fishing rod. Whoop Whoop!

Many thanks for the replies, most helpful.

Right i'm off to teach myself Japanese, I've got a "Teach yourself Japanese in 30 days" book, I'm about 78 days in and on lesson 6 but you've got to persevere haven't you?

Again cheers for the replies.
