Am I better off buying travel guides here or in Mexico? I plan on buying one for the specific area where I'll be taking my tefl course and am thinking about getting a general, full country guide as well. I don't feel like lugging too much stuff with me. I am recovering from shoulder surgery and am trying to travel light. |

Assuming you prefer them in English, you may want to bring some with you. The selection of books in English, even travel guides, is rather limited in Mexico.
Lonely Planet has started offering downloadable guides for regions; see http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1389648&tstart=0 which are apparently expensive if you want several regions, but might be worthwhile if you only need one specific region and want to avoid carrying extra books into Mexico. After arriving, you could buy one, print it at an internet caf and get it bound at any papelera. |

You can find these books in Guadalajara, if you are coming here. There is an English-language bookstore in Colonia Chapalita called Sandi's (Tepayac and las Rosas).
You can get the LP books there and some Moon handbooks. Also, I think Ghandi's bookstore has a small selection of travel books in English. |

Guadalajara is where I'm going. Thanks all for the helpful info. For now I am just going to get the moon Guadalajara book to prepare myself and I'll pick up what I need along the way. |

Even if you can find English-language guide books in Mexico, they'll always be more expensive here than they would be in the US or Canada, because they're imported. |

Yes, always stock up on and buy English language books back home. If you do need travel books here, Mundo Joven usually seems to have LP in English. |
