The Japanese connection to Brazil and Hawaii is definetely alive. What are some things you've seen or heard recently that were either Hawaiian or Brazilian?
Brazilian: MUSIC. There is a lot of Brazilian music being played in stores and such.
Hawaiian: MUSIC again. I have heard the Hawaiian music. Some of the merchandise in stores occassionally has a Hawaiian theme. Most interestingly to me is I know of about 4 or 5 bars/restauarants in my neck of the woods that have the entire spectrum of 7 or 8 different Hawaiian Beers!
Any things Hawaiian or Brazilian you've noticed while in Japan? |

There used to be a Hawaiian restaurant somewhere in the Kamakura area. Don't know if it's still there. |

There are "faux" Hawaiian restaurants all over Tokyo, including a burger chain whose name escapes me right now. It's not really surprising that there are Hawaiian and Brazilian references around- Hawaii is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Japanese if not the most popular, and there are a lot of Brazilian-Japanese immigrants, hence the Asakusa Samba Carnival etc.
If Tiger beer wanted to he could start threads about cultural references for all kinds of countries- the Japanese import the things that interest them from other countries' cultures. I wouldn't say Hawaiian and Brazilian themes were that predominant. |

Hawaiian and Brasilian themes abound because these are two places that Japanese emigrated to in droves in fact I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't the places that had the most emigrants other than the US. The reason TB hasn't noticed the ubiquitous US theme here is because it's familiar and it's suppose to be there right? |

I was also thinking that far and away the most predominant foreign influence here was the USA... |

Here's a bit of info:

Certainly, Korean and Chinese influences are probably much larger than Brazilian and Hawaiian and, as markle and Apsara point out, mainland USA is probably a bigger contributor too. In Hokkaido there are quite a number of Russian influences. |
