|
|
While I whole heartedly believe that your photo on your CV is a good thing, putting a bad photo is just plain horrible. This week I've received CVs with head shots (you're going to be an English teacher, not a model), goofy ones(making funny faces won't get you a job) and people with friends while travelling (you shouldn't put travel pixs on a formal document). And pixs with sunglasses and a hat don't say much either.
So if you're goign to put use a photo, make it professional, with a suit and tie or blouse, just you and looking at the camera.
Just my 2 cents. |

I'd add that photos where you clearly are, or have been, drinking don't make the grade with a professional application either.
I'm curious about this, though:

Gotta say I don't really agree. Teachers, not models after all.
Best,

| But in lots of places employers ask for photos anyways. Just a straight shot, something like on your passport, but nice looking and professional |

I don't care for the practice either. I don't have a photo attached to my CV, and I will only send one if it is specifically mentioned in a job ad--and then I send a passport photo. I also don't include my age and marital status on my CV.
Justin, have you had people send you drinking photos? Are people really that stupid?

| I routinely ask for a passport scan along with the visa when soliciting CV's. I would like to think no one is looking for models or beautiful people but it probably happens by some folks. I make the initial determination as to whether I wish to represent the teacher to a client based on the resume and expertise. The only reason for the passport scan is to verify they have a legitimate passport and determine their visa status. My client schools are simply told this is who I am recommending and I believe they are well-qualified and able to work here. |

I don't like the practice of submitting photos because every culture is guilty of "lookism" Here in China, as nature girl nows, White and blonde makes for a easy job sear4ch. Black? Regardless of English level, much more difficult. Black and African makes for a really difficult job searches.
occassionaly a recruiter will try not to include photos to the Chinese schools, but the school wants to lnow, and they is the boss |

Feeling strongly about this, Arioch? (More likely a slow connection and accidental extra posts, but you know.)

Yes, and apparently so. Some people are about that stupid.

I've never included a photo with my resume when applying for work in Mexico and Spain and was never asked for one. and I've had lots of job offers in both countries over the years.
Ooops, forgot to mention that I was also offered a job in Ecuador (thanks, Justin) without including a photo on my resume. |

| What wrong with a head shot? It's probably a professionally taken photo where the applicant looks their best. It's better than a mugshot passport photo in my opinion. |

Hi folks,
Everyone should have the right to employ exactly who they like and if they decide that looks are an important issue, then so be it. I believe that people should be allowed to ask for pics for two reasons:
1. If a particular employer does consider looks an issue, wouldn't you rather be eliminated at the get-go than waste your time going to interviews, or in the case of distance-hiring, a lot more? Would you want to work for that person anyway? Stopping employers asking for certain things only stops us knowing more accurately what kind of employer we're dealing with.
2. If an employer hires people based on their looks because he believes this will somehow improve his business, and he is wrong, then his punishment will be, in the case of teaching for example, a staff of attractive but essentially useless teachers who will probably run his business into the ground!
Cheers,
Mike |

So you're saying that an experienced, qualified, good looking teacher is somehow worse than an experienced, qualified, ugly teacher?
If so, I don't agree.
I have a friend.... Ahem....who mainly employs good looking, male teachers and the student re-sign rates, compared to those from the female 'munter' teachers, are phenomenal. Facts you can't argue with.
I would say attach a photo if you are good looking, but if you resemble the offspring of a rottweiller having been raped by an Orc, forget it. |

Er...no...I'm not saying that, PBW.
I'm saying that *IF* an employer believes he will make more money by hiring people based on looks, and *IF* this is wrong, then his business will suffer, but ultimately it's his choice to hire as he sees fit. If his method of hiring is detrimental to the business, then it's his bad luck. On the other hand, if attractive teachers are benificial to business, as your case seems to suggest, then why shouldn't he allowed to ask for a photo?
I don't personally consider there to be any connection between looks and teaching ability, but 'business' is about making money, and in teaching that means getting repeat custom, and that's not always a function of pure pedagogical knowledge. |
