Hello everyone!
I am new to the site and wanted to say hello. It's amazing that after only a few days of browsing I have learnt so much and have had so many of my questions answered, this is a great site!
I am graduating from University on Sunday and am hoping to move from my home in Winnipe, Manitoba Canada to Oaxaca, Mexico to teach English in August. I am currently in the process of applying for a job with the UNISTMO, the position would be at the Ixtepec campus. It is my understanding that teachers from that school often live in Juchitan. Does anyone currently live in the area or have any experiences/information that might be interesting/helpful for someone who may be moving there?
Also I am specifically curious to hear about the experiences of single women moving to Mexico.
Thank you all for your help and for the loads of knowledge I have already picked up.

Isn;t Juchitan rumored to be one of the most matriarchal places in the world, if such a place truly exists? I wonder how submissive that would make the local indigenous men.....
Seriously, I misunderstood. If you search on the Mexico forum, I think Juchitan was discussed. It is not matriarchial, but maybe matrifocal. |

Why not contact the person you've been in touch with at UNISTMO with these questions? Ask for the email address of other current or former teachers (there is one former teacher who occasionally posts here) and contact them with these questions. Ixtepec is a very out of the way place. Juchitan is only a little less out of the way than Ixtepec. Probably few posters have been there.
The women do control the money and are heads of households there. You can find some interesting articles about it on-line. Remember, Google is your friend. |

I have done both of those things I am just trying to learn as much about the area as possible and thought it would be useful to ask questions on here as well as I am sure that everyone has different experiences. |

I'd be the former teacher that MELEE is talking about.
It is rare that teachers live in Juchitan rather than Ixtepec. All the teachers that are working there right now either live on campus or in Ixtepec. The biggest reason is that Juchitan is about a 45 min bus ride from the Ixtepec campus and you'd have to change buses in the centro. If you have a car, you could make it in about 30 minutes.
