|

A Secondary school has contacted me about a NET postion:
"We are looking for a NET teacher who can teach new curriculum about drama or story-telling".
I'd like to find out more about this before I find myself in a telephone interview. If I teach drama and story-telling would that mean I'd be roughly teaching the whole school and therefore wouldn't have my own classes where I could establish relationships with the students?
The new curriculum they're referring to - is this part of the 3+3+4 (which I didn't think was coming in until 2009) or is it part of general changes? I've been trying to find stuff on the internet but not having much luck.
Any help on this would be much appreciated! |

The 334 thing kicks off this year, but I don't think it will make much difference as far as NETs are concerned. Drama and storytelling sounds (to me) better than banging away at ESL. Impossible to say how you might be spread - it depends how the school intends using you. My wife is a NET and does drama (as well as English), but mostly with students who've been selected for performing, ie. small numbers. Again, if possible, talk to the incumbent NET. |

Students currently in Form 2 (Grade 8 ) will be the first cohort of the 3-3-4 system. In Forms 5 and 6 they will have elective modules in English under the New Senior Secondary Academic Structure (NSS). The eight modules include "Language Arts" modules such as Learning English through Drama, LEt Poems & Songs, LEt Short Stories, and "Non-Language Arts" modules: LEt Workplace Communication, LEt Sports Communication.
Do a search of NSS or HK Diploma of Secondary Education and you'll find out why the school is asking about drama and story-telling. Try either wikipedia or the HKEAA first.
Remember if an emb website won't open, change it to edb.
Each school runs things its own way. Be sure to ask what they are planning. Don't assume anything. |

Many thanks for these replies... I have done some more careful internet research and have found all sorts of information.
Two schools have contacted me so far and both of them want the NET to be involved in setting up and trying out these electives... so it's really important, like you say, to know exactly what they'll want me to do.
I'm going to be in contact with one of the NETs in one of the schools so I will be asking some careful questions. It seems the remit of the NET is forever changing and expanding!
Many thanks again! |

Essentially, the individual NET's remit is decided by the school - end of story! |
