i've got a load of students who are entering their final year at university in september, and won't have english classes ever again. thinking of advice to give them, about keeping up their english.
after graduation, most of them are going to be working as teachers (of chinese), or in local businesses where they probably won't use much english.
usual ways they can keep practising and improving their english, after they've left:
watch movies, preferably with double subtitles, english and chinese.
practise speaking by making online foreign friends and chatting with them over VOIP (don't know if the 'myhappyplanet' website actually works in practice, but that sort of idea will likely develop).
english reader books.
going to local english corners.
keep in touch with any foreign acquaintances (usually their foreign teachers) through email and Facebook.
also will give them some motivational stuff: tell them that language is something you do for self-edification, not just for exams/jobs; that regular bilingual practice can apparently keep the mind elastic and reduce chance of alzheimer's; that english is their language, not something that belongs to the US or UK.
any ideas? |

You have covered the main points. I tell my students to get something they like on DVD and to watch it once in Chinese then English and then Chinese again etc. I find that after I have watched a DVD a few times I can just about remember all the interesting parts of conversation in the story. You get to observe body language and listen to how body language and tone can change the meaning of what is said.
The two things I can add however is to get them to write conversational script:
Tom: You look terrible Sue! What happened to you?
Sue: I had a fight with my boyfriend! I caught him with another girl.
Apparently he's been two timing me for some time. He wont
anymore but as I put him into hospital after I laid him out with a
fry pan.
..
Second to write a story or an essay like one writes at university:
Last year I was caught in a big city during and earthquake. It was a terrible experience and I never want to experience anything similar again. I saw many people caught under the rubble of collapsed buildings. I helped as much as I could but often I felt helpless as I only had bare hands to help with.
.............................................................................................
I think that the old ways of eating in China were a lot better than the way most are eating these days despite better incomes. Natural whole fresh food from the markets is much better than the processed rubbish available from supermarkets and fast food outlets. I have found that once I start to eat out and eat convenience food after work at home to save time on preparing good meals that I end up sick after a time. |
