Here in the center of Mexico City it's been raining steadily for over two hours. I know it's a little early for it to be the official start of the rainy season, but it's really wonderful to hear the sound of the rain pitter-pattering on the roof and to have my pollution-induced sinus headache go away like magic! |

Since the pre-Hispanic gods often had hyphenated identities, we could call the cause of the recent rains Tlaloc-Arthur! |

Yeah it's good to have the rain back. Gets so dry in Mexico City during the winter and spring. That and the record heat we had in May. The city was handing out free water in the metro during the heat wave, though I thought that it wasn't quite THAT hot. |

Has anyone noticed a change in the time of day it rains? Last year it rained almost exclusively in the evening here, after 7pm or even later. But this year, so far, we've had a lot of afternoon rains. |

Whatever the name, I'm happy to have my sisterna full!
Bring on Tlaloc-Alma or Tlaloc-Bertha who ever comes first! (but make them gentle on our friends on the coast, please.)
2008 storm names
For us in the Mixteca the time depends on if it was a hurricane/tropical storm residue rain or just a front. Fronts are late afternoon, storms, hurricane rains are anytime, and just straight down for hours, not a storm--times like that when I'm glad there is a mountain range between us and each coast.

Over the years I've been here, I would say the norm is an afternoon rain, starting around 4 PM or so. Sometimes in the early evening. What's off is when it starts to rain in the morning, such as yesterday and perhaps today.
Rainy season last year seemed to start as early as April, whereas this year, I think it's a more normal late May. |

I'm glad my weather-thread has picked up some steam (or should that be thunder and lightening?).
Reading about rain in Mexico has reminded me of the unseasonably hot weather folks are experiencing back in the land of my birth, the East Coast of the US. Temperatures in Philly and New York are now in the nineties (F.), which is much more typical of August in that part of the world. When thinking about the high humidity that usually goes along with it, I'm super-happy to be here in the urban highlands of my adopted home! |
