So, Sven has been appointed National coach - although I guess all the Gringos and Canucks here couldn't give two hoots
At England coach, "we" reached two World Cup quarter finals. I'm wondering what he can do with this bunch of lazy, underacheiving players.
Any thoughts? |

I say he lasts two seasons. Because that's about all I could handle of the Mexican squad before losing my mind. |

I guess my first thought was how will he pull this off when he doesn't speak Spanish? He says he knows Italian, Portugese and English but that he will be speaking acceptable Spanish in 3 months. Maybe he is a miracle worker after all! |

Sven got one bunch of lazy underachieving players to the quarter final, which compares well with his successor, who didn't even get them past qualification.
He did put some ghosts to rest, England beat Argentina in a major tourney, Man City beat Man Utd twice. So maybe Mexico can look forward to beating the US but not much else.
Samantha, he is Scandanavian, so like the Dutch, has that language acquisition device gene Chomsky could never find. He will probably pick up a smattering of Azorean as he flies across the Atlantic. |

I can't see him taking them much further in the World Cup, something like second round.
Didn't he give his first press conference in Spanish? |

Ummm, not quite - he read a prepared statement badly. Welcome to Meshiko |

Apparentely the new coach of England, Fabio Capello (Italian), did just that, although I'm skeptical as too whether he was an absolute beginner in English.
Good to see that my thread that had nothing to do with language learning has fallen within the remit of the forum! |

Impressive that Capello learnt English in 3 months considering how horrendous Italians are in the classroom. Sven can point and grunt at the Mexican squad.
I think any Mexican coach is being set up for failure as there is far too much expectation in this country of such a mediocre team. Hats off to him if he does anything of significance. |

I just had a vision of Fabio Capello in the middle of a classroom full of Italian teenagers on an Embassy summer school, earnestly trying to study while the rest of them try to cop off. (of course while Fabio is studying, it is SVEN that is doing all the copping off anyway! ) |
