Can anyone give me an idea of what life for a teacher is like in Surabaya.
Is it too hot for a Canadian to do activities outside? Are the locals nice? Is there plenty to do in spare time?
Any insite on the city would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Too hot? maybe. just stay in door from 9 AM till 4 PM, after that is not that bad.
what kind of activitties do u like? if you like outdoor things, such as hiking, biking or rafting, than you will hate surabaya.
Surabaya is a city with little to offer if you don like malls. But the flip side of that is, the traffic is pretty mild compare to Jakarta and the air is cleaner. |

I have to admit that I am a little worried about the heat, but after a full day of teaching I may not have the energy for anything more than the mall.
Would you know if there are good restaurants and socializing (not the Dolly kind either) I found China to be hot but in the evenings it was much nicer.

I personally find Surabaya ok, certainly a much more livable city than Jakarta. You can tell reliably how long it will take you to get from one place to another, it's not as noisy, crowded, polluted, etc. And flooding is rare.
In terms of the heat, here are the average temperatures:
http://www.worldweather.org/043/c00648.htm
At my place, most days the minimum is 26 and the maximum 31 or 32. However, the humidity isn't as high as Jakarta.
Surabaya has a bit of a reputation amongst Indonesians from Jakarta for being boring in terms of entertainment and nightlife, but there are a few nice restaurants, parks, etc.
Locals are curious, but friendly. If you need to buy something, best to ask around your new work colleagues where the best place is. |

Flooding is not rare, but it is much less dramatic than the flooding seen in Jakarta.
Surabaya is known as a very hot city even by Indonesian standards.
Less crowded and polluted than Jakarta - but once you're stuck in midday traffic the comparison will be meaningless. It is still crowded and polluted. The city planning is better than that found in Jakarta - but that is not saying much.
There is a lot to be found at night, and it is more varied than Jakarta. But if you are into big modern clubs, Surabaya will disappoint you. Surabaya has a good selection of live music bars/cafes - much better than Jakarta's overpriced rubbish.
Malls. There are many. Dolly. There is only one. You will visit. Everyone does. |
