So here's the deal on entry requirements for US citizens.
Some time ago, rather recently, I"m not exactly sure when. China changed the requirements. Before you needed a round trip ticket. NOW, you don't. MOst travel agents don't know this and will tell you that you need a return. YOu don't Go to the Department of State and check. YOu can also check with the embassy and consulate.
When I arrived, they just said hello and welcome to China, Didn't ask for a return ticket or anything.

Many countries do require foreign visitors arriving by plane to have an onward or roundtrip airplane ticket. That's a reasonable precaution, but China is the biggest exception to my knowledge.
However, a couple of weeks ago someone asked me about the current situation here; I was stunned to learn that he had been informed by his travel agent that passengers must have a round trip ticket, or face being denied boarding rights.
I advised he wouldn't need a round trip ticket.
I hope I was right.
Maybe the situation is no longer the same as regards AMERICNANS.
On the other hand, a year ago Canadians used to have to show a round trip ticket to CANADIAN authorities before boarding Aisa-bound planes. Meanwhile, this rule seems to have been modified.
Personally, I can't imagine the CHinese Immigration to be concerned about each individual traveller having a plane ticket out of Hong Kong or the mainland. I think the educational effort to bring about the attitudinal change to these officials would be too taxing.
But, we never know. |

In my experience, China has never cared. When I traveled out of my small city airport (Albany New York) they never cared. Once I flew out of Boston. My visa was a type that had no expiration date. The check in person was worried, called her superior, and I had to tell her back off, let me worry about it. |
