Hey all.
I'm in Korea. I want to visit friends in Okinawa this summer. For those of you in Japan who have been to Okinawa, what was cheapest way to get there? From Korea, return airfare is around 1,000 US. I was thinking ferry to Fukuoka, and then a flight. Does this make sense to those in Japan?
Are there ferries going there? I have lots of time, so it doesn't matter if I take a slow boat.

Ideas?

I would think you could do better than $1000 US from Korea and back.

There are ferries but they sometimes only run once a week depending on where you're taking it from, and they do seriously take a long time.

I would think the best option would be to fly from Korea to Tokyo, Fukuoka, or Osaka and then take a plane to Naha, Okinawa.

I haven't been to Korea, but I scored a round trip flight to Osaka from Okinawa in the off-season (early March) for 2man.

Thanks. I will be going at the end of July, but even if it's 5 times that 2 man won, it's still a good price.
Getting to Osaka shouldn't be that hard.
The ferry to Fukuoka is cheap, and I could take a train to Osaka.
Thanks. I'll probably bump this later to try for more responses.

If you're coming to Fukuoka anyway, you might just try taking a plane or ferry from Fukuoka, rather than going up to Osaka...your best bet is probably to book a flight in advance so you can get a discount. It'll probably be about the same price as the ferry. I think there are ferries going out of Oita (maybe?) and Kagoshima, both in Kyushu, and both within easy access of Fukuoka.

Good Luck.

Ferry to Fukuoka, plane to Naha. ANA is showing a cheapest fare of 17000 yen one-way, double that for return, with taxes probably 40,000 yen round trip being conservative. I'd book very soon though if you're going the end of July, wait and the top end will be 29000 yen one-way.

I don't know about ferries from Kyushu to Okinawa, but there are ferries from Taiwan. I've seen fares in the $500 range (r/t) SEL-TPE-SEL. The round trip ferry fare is probably around $300 so you'd save a little doing it that way. Taipei is a major airline hub so there are frequently deals going there. You'd also have to deal with taking the train from Taipei to Keelung or Kaohsiung to catch the ferry to Naha. That shouldn't cost too much though. Taiwan's not all that big of a place.

Personally, I'd probably just pay the extra 200 clams and fly direct, but if you're interested in some seafaring adventuring and maybe some sightseeing along the way, this may be an option for you.
