Hi everyone,
I've been reading this forum for a while and recently decided to join. 
I have a year's teaching experience and I'm now thinking of working in the UAE. I don't have an MA so I know this limits my options, but I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the recruiter Eduplace? I've been in touch with them and everything seems above board. I'd like to get a job in Dubai and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about their reputation or the reputation of the schools/academies they recruit for?
Another option I'm looking at is working with the British Council in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. I have worked with them in Madrid and it has been a good experience,but I'd love to hear from anyone who has worked with them in the UAE.

Niahm,
I take it you're not a qualified teacher? Generally, I would steer clear of recruiters for the UAE (have not heard of eduplace). Unlike Spain, the UAE does not have many decent employment opportunities for those w/o a teaching qualification or the MA TESOL. The BC would be your best chance at a decent opportunity (decent pay and proper treatment). |

Hi Mishmumkin,
Thanks for the info. No I'm not a qualifed teacher but I have TEFL training. Maybe I should stick with the BC in that case...

Whilst the BC are pretty good to work for the biggest problem facing you over here will be the price of somewhere decent to live. It does actually say in the job ad posted that teachers will have to dip into their monthly salary to supplement the housing allowance).
It all depends on what your priorities are - the pd opportunities and the 'experience' (for want of a better word) of living in the UAE or the money... |

Yeah, I know what you mean. But I'm not hoping to earn lots of money...I'd just love to live in the UAE and get some more experience. At the same time, it'd be great to be able to save at least little. |

Having lived in Nigeria, I find it very hard to believe that the BC is one of the worst employers! I would say it is probably one of the best! Certainly, throughout the world, with the BC the very least you can expect is good professional development, decent pay and an employer who honours the contract.
If you get the BC position, I would recommend that you take it.

I find that hard to believe. Perhaps you " heard " that from some teacher who was sacked.
Although BC wages are not the greatest they generally come highly recommended as far as working conditions go. |

All true re HCT except this bit... when I read "micro management" in education, I think of having a set procedure making sure that every teacher is on the same page every day. That isn't true at any of the HCT branches that I have heard about. You have the course outline and perhaps a text, but you cover the material - add and delete - as per yourself with no one peering over your shoulder unless students complain.
Language schools tend to be very structured - or so I have heard since I never taught in one.
