I did a search on teaching in Nepal, but didn't come up with anything recent or pertinent. I am flirting with the idea of doing some volunteer teaching in Nepal next year (for 6 months to a year preferably, but obviously dependent on the political situation there).
I'd really like to avoid the volunteer organizations that charge hefty fees for placement. I understand that a lot of that probably goes to program-related expenses, but I'd rather find an organization that requires limited financial obligation, especially if I volunteer for several months. I'm not interested in just a two week feel-good-about-myself vacation. I'd really like to dig a little deeper and learn a bit more about the country. I'm a U.S. citizen, and I realize that arriving as a tourist limits my options of staying over 6 months (150 days max in one year). Are there any NGOs or other volunteer groups that assist in arranging visas? I'm not adverse to simply arriving as a tourist, studying the language and hanging out for 6 months, but I'd prefer a reputable outfit to work with and continue teaching during that time. Has anyone volunteered in Nepal, and if so could you share your wisdom, experiences? Are there any volunteer groups/NGOs that don't require sizable fees? Any other recommendations, advice is also appreciated.
Thanks! |
