Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but even in Madrid you'd be hard-pushed to earn a living arriving in mid-August.

Mid-September's the best time of year to arrive as human resources managers are back and are starting to get round to organising their new training schedule. If you arrive mid-August you'll have to wait till the end of October to get your first full pay packet so if you do decide to arrive early then make sure you have at least 1000 euros per month to live off until you get a full schedule (plus flat deposit).

(sorry to be so negative but no papers combined with the fact that the world and his dog want to teach in Barcelona means timing is pretty crucial!)

Are you aware that it's nearly impossible to work legally in Spain as a North American?

No, it's not possible to get a job before arriving. This would be true even if you were British (and, therefore, eligible for a legal work permit) - there are plenty of well-qualified teachers who want to be in Spain, and schools don't hire from abroad in general. They want to see you standing there in front of them, looking professional and reliable, with your CV in hand, before they will give you any real consideration.

As you seem to be fairly un-clued-in as yet, I will also add that you should beware of any offer to get you a work visa for some fees that you will pay in advance. The national governments of Spain, Italy, France, and other European countries don't allow for legal hiring of English teachers (and many other types of workers) from outside the EU, outside of a few very specific circumstances - for teachers with specialist qualifications, usually.

By the way, hughesie is right - you should really spend a little time reading earlier posts - then you'd have a much better idea of what is available to you as a Canadian citizen in Spain.

i have read many of the posts. i'm actually only looking for short term work until i can find something decent in Saudi and i have friends to stay with in valencia. 3-6 months sort of thing. i was hoping to find something in barcelona however, because i can't stay with them for more than a few weeks. i was hoping to find a room or a flat to share.
how unrealistic is that?

The flat thing would be a cinch but as for 3 to 6 months of work, it'll be difficult as most courses would run from October through til June. Of course you could lie and say that you're planning to stay there longer but it's not a very nice thing to do to either students or employers. You could try and get business English courses. Arrive the second week in September to optimize your chances.

Oh and ditch any ideas of finding work before you arrive.
