I'm arriving in Japan next week for the twenteenth time, but for once I'm venturing out of Tokyo. I'm heading down to Osaka to visit Universal Studios before the crowds hit once the schools let out next month. I'll be in town for two nights but have no idea what to do.

I figure the first night I can just wander around Namba with my camera and grab a bite and a beer before getting back to the hotel. What about the second night? Or the next day before shinkansening back to Tokyo?

I'm not one for temples or shrines, but if it's something spectacular, I'll give it a looksee. Anything in the way of shopping, like in Akihabara? Or a place for people watching? A place just to hang out for a few hours in the morning / early afternoon?

Well, the main shopping districts are Namba and Umeda. The bar/club/nightlife districts are Shinsaibashi (near Namba) and Kitashinchi (near Umeda).

You have an aquarium in Tempozan, a ramen museum in the northern suburb of Ikeda, a huge shotengai in Tenjinbashi, lots of Korean restaurants in Tsuruhashi, and easy access to Kobe and Kyoto from Umeda.

Fun city. Nowhere as near as large as Tokyo and much easier to navigate.

Avoid Tsuruhashi. Got it.

Any kitschy places to wander around in, like Harajuku?

There's Ame-mura, Dotonbori, and Den-Den Town, all within walking distance of Namba.

There's also Osaka-jo, assuming castles don't fall in with shrines and temples for you.

I second Amerika-mura, especially if you are going for the Harajuku vibe:

All those will do nicely for a night and an afternoon. Thanks.
