I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about this certification program. They say in the job ad that they are a

diverse, urban school district that is intensely focused on student achievement and education reform. Located in southwest Tennessee, the district has strong community relationships and some of the best schools in the nation. |
But it sounds to me like they want you to teach rowdy ghetto kids. Otherwise, why would they be hiring people who didn't have teaching certificates? Any info would be appreciated. |

I just moved to TN, just north of Memphis a few months ago. I have been looking for a teaching job in Tipton County, which is very small. From what I've heard, Memphis City Schools are not the place to be, unless you really want to be teaching in a rough situation. They just hired a new Superintendent, after a much publicized search (in which the current, very corrupt and unpopular Mayor said he would resign as mayor if they appointed him superintendent). The mayor was not elected. This mayor has also publicly stated that he does not believe the crime in Memphis is his problem, nor his responsibility. The district has a terrible reputation. There have been three high school shootings (that I know of) just this past school year. I know they desperately need teachers, but their website is full of euphemisms. In my opinion, it would be a very difficult place to teach. |

Thanks for the info. Your response confirms my suspicions. They lied through their teeth in the job ad. I suppose they should have said the schools are some of "the best schools in the nation" for getting shot at! Well, I guess they were close. Obviously, they aren't the kind of people who I'd want to work for if the first thing they do is lie to you. |

The superintendent of my school district (Buffalo, NY) recently turned down the Memphis superintendent job. |

Schools like these will have serious problems, so please expect that. However, this does not mean that you can not teach there and make a difference, but be prepared -- violence, shocking mismanagment just to mention a couple. You should read up about these big school districts in the local news. |
