I accepted a position in Beijing and plan to move there with my girlfriend, a beijing native currently here in NYC with me. I just read that the Z VISA is only good for three months with single entry only. Does anyone have any more info. abouth this policy? We have vacation plans to Thailand and Japan this summer.
Also, I have yet to receive the invitation which has now taken over a month and I'm quite worried about the situation because it seems very backed up with the upcoming events and all.
Any current info. would be much appreciated. |

Z visa is only good for 3 month? What happens after that? Schools usually make you sign a contract for 1 year, I thought the visa is at least good for the entire year. I'm waiting for my invitation letter as well, it's only been 2 weeks for me and I'm getting worried too. |

You have 3 months to use the Z to enter China. Once you enter you have 30 days to get your Residence Permit. Your school will help you with that. The RP is usually good for about a year, or until your contract expires. It's placed in your passport. Once you have the RP you can leave and enter China as often as you wish.

Couldn't have said it better. Most (all?) visas must be used in a certain time period or they expire |

What Aridine said so well. The three months is the window in which you must enter China.
Once you enter, you'll note your Z visa states it is good for "000" days. That is actually 30 days. During that time you'll get an FRP sticker (Foreign Residence Permit) which allows you to live in China and serves as a multiple re-entry visa. |

Oh, one thing you must rigester with the local police as soon as you start living here to let them know where you are. Don't avoid doing this or else you will get off on the wrong foot. |

yes, you need to stop by the cop shop early on. the form that'll be completed is "accomodation registration form for visitors from overseas".
not much of a problem. they'll want to see your passport and your work invite. bring a couple of passport photos too (heck, always carry these early on). bring your handler.
in doing so, i got to meet the high ranking local police. when i saw them a week later at the KTV in plainclothes i knew who they were. good stuff to know.
also, as work permit processing time is greatly slowed by the olympic build-up having the cops know your face will be a good thing for the month or so you may be without your "real" passport. |
