Hey,
I am in Korea teaching right now. I was thinking about the differences in Korea and Japan. From, my vists to Japan, it looks as if Japan has more of a Westernized mindset, but Iam sure there are exceptions to the societal norm. I have heard that Japanese have less rascist tatics and are open to dating Westerners.
Excuse my ingorance if I am off point with this, but it seems as if the Japanese have achieved such a high social standing through less instutionlized control of societal heiarcharcy....Are they self-victimizers ( like Koreans) and work off a blame tatic of control???? |

Re first paragraph - plenty of Japanese women are willing to date foreign men in the larger cities. Can't comment about what it's like in the countryside, and I'll let female posters speak for themselves about Japanese men. I have no idea when you mean by racist tatics.
Re second paragraph - I would say there is plenty of institutionalized control of social status in Japan. Some of it is becoming out-dated, but sempai-kohai relationships, promotions through seniority rather than merit and other things have not dies out yet. Is that what you meant? To be honest, I'm not really sure what you're asking. |

Sour Grape,
Yep you got the main point right. I guess I should have worded it a little better...
By raciest taticts, I was talking about what happens in South Korea. Foreigners can't get debit cards, phone plans ( execpt pre-paid) or really anything the Korean haves and most Korean guys do not date foreigns. But, that is still an interesting point about the seniority.
I really don't Koreans have experienced as much social change as the Japanese have in the last fifty years. The ideas of conficism ( respect to a hiearchary of elder) have just stayed. However, I see alot of "blame" and abuse comming these higher ups as well. I honestly think the Japanese have got it righter. |

I lived in South Korea for years before coming to Japan. So I understand where you are coming from.
But actually, foreigners in Korea CAN get debit cards, and even credit cards. They can with 50/50 success get phone plans depending on which service they are trying to get. I am not sure about Korean guys not dating foreigners, as I knew a handful of foreign women who were married to Korean men, (personally I always sort of questioned why though). |
