Or is this some agent wanting to make sure he doesn't hire any more backpackers?

Since compounds are mentioned, I assume by "Middle East" he is really referring to Saudi Arabia? It's interesting that only those with 'negative' experiences need apply. Sounds like the Jarir and Tamimi brigade will be heavily represented in this 'documentary'.

Otherwise known as "Kompound Kate and Ken" - the types of folks who never leave the haven of their compound unless it is a rushed trip to the above-mentioned Jarir or Tamimi. (For those outside Riyadh, Tamimi is an overpriced supermarket where one can buy "Western" - ie American - 'goods' of the processed, packaged and high fructose corn syrup laden variety.) The reason these outlets are so popular? You can be fairly sure of meeting a relatively high proportion of "Westerners", so you can make beleive you've never left the compound at all.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ! The sort who live in "Arabian Homes", where all the areas of the compounds have Spanish names so you can pretend that you are in the Costa del Sol and not in Saudi Arabia. "Almeria", "Granada", "Escorial".

ARAMCO too is full of them. Like the ones I have met - born on ARAMCO, grew up there, but have zero knowledge of Arabic !

Considering that this person only asks for 'negative' experiences, one suspects that there is a strong anti-Arab perspective going on here. More nuke justification propaganda. (the 'let's just nuke 'em and take our oil' crowd)

I suppose one could say that 'negative' stories tend to be more newsworthy - a bit like those 'documentaries' that follow families who move to sunny Australia or Spain, only to have their dream turn into a nightmare. Nobody really wants to spend time watching a family for whom things turned out to be quite alright, really.

Then again, it could be as VS says.

Yup - Club Tropicana KSA style. In Riyadh you also have at least one compound named after a US state, as in "Arizona".

We should all flood him with applications, and then tell wonderful stories of our lives viewed through rose-coloured glasses.
