What are the working conditions like? What is the cost of living? Can anyone give me the names of some schools? Are there a lot of jobs there? |

i taught in haikou. but that was so long ago it counts as history. used to be a sleepy port town with wonderfully kind folks. but ther was excrement all over the sidewalks with no dogs around.
now...i don't know. the hunter gathers shouldering ancient flintlock muskets and shooting anything that stirred have probably been resettled in some concrete home.
sanya was even sleepier than haikou and boai was a gnat sized fishing village.
go now. ain't nowhere getting any better. they had just put in the superwide highway....something like five lanes each way. all we could do was laugh. no one had cars. seemed every week a farmer's roaming water buffalo would cream a touring bus.
google up "hainan english teach" or something like that. happy hunting. |

I am just back from Hainan, having worked there since 2006, first as a volunteer, and then as a paid member of staff since march 2007.
There are jobs in Haikou that seem to pay from around 4000 rmb per month upward. Haikou being the capital city is more expensive to live than some of the smaller cities, but it is still probably cheap compared to many places on the mainland.
I was actually in Wenchang, salary here was 3400 rmb per month, for 14 lessons a week, with most of the other usual benefits such as house, return air fare etc.
Cost of living is very low in wenchang, simply as there is no Pizza Hut, KFC, no supermarket that sells anything remotely western, so if your looking for an expat community, Wenchang isnt it.
I have also heard of jobs in most other cities on the island, but I have never heard anything good about Sanya...this is word of mouth, but it would appear that most teachers who start in sanya, soon end up in other parts of the island.
I do have contacts there, and it is possible that my old employer will be looking for new staff as two of us have left this month.
Send me a PM if you are interested, and I will send you an email address of the schools FAO |
