I went through the first three pages of search results for Okinawa and summarized the relative posts I could find below. The consensus is that there are few jobs in Okinawa and competition for them is high due to the spouses of military personnel. Pay is lower but the cost of living is lower, too.

Summaries:

There are not many job openings. There are a couple universities: University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa Christian University and Okinawa Kokusai (International) University. Source: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=67369&highlight=okinawa

There are not many jobs. The military offers free English lessons. Finding a job from outside of Okinawa is even harder.

Not many jobs. The wives of military personnel are teaching for very low salaries. Okinawa was reported to be the most desirable place to live in Japan.

Most jobs are taken up by spouses of military staff. Better chances of finding a job as a scuba instructor.

62 applicants for one position. Pay 150,000 Yen/Mo. Jobs available on base. Two links: https://www.mccsokinawa.com/jobs/and http://www.japanupdate.com/classifieds/english/ .

Jobs are hard to find; salaries are low; things are still expensive, but not as expensive as the mainland.

Most difficult place to find work: few jobs; high competition from the military base residents; low pay. Link provided in post: http://www.japanupdate.com .

Da-a-a-amn. I just got back from a week's vacation in Okinawa and I'd really love to live there. I really prefer the culture -- things aren't so locked down.
