It's my understanding that in order to get a high-paying job in a Gulf country you need a MA in applied linguistics, TESOL or TEFL. (Is one of these preferred, or are they all considered equally valuable in terms of getting high-paying work?)
What are some good MA programs that I should consider, both in the region and outside of it? I figure if I'm aiming to teach in the Gulf, I may as well attend a program in an Arab country, or better yet a GCC country, the better to become somewhat acculturated and also learn which schools I may want to work for after graduation (and hopefully making some contacts, etc.)
I'm considering AUC (American University in Cairo) as well as AUS (American University in Sharjah, U.A.E.). Any thoughts on these programs? And what others should I know about? |

Between the two, AUC, definitely. Also, Egypt offers more avenues for assimiliation of culture, both Arab and pre-Arab. The Egyptians are more accommodating of foreigners than GCC nationals, too. |

Getting an MA in TEFL/TESOL/Applied Linguistics is definitely an advantage in the Gulf. Especially when it comes to how much you can earn. Let's face it, for most of us, gazing at that SR"**,***" amount on your playslip every month is the sole reason we're (still) here.
There are plenty of distance courses on Net. Do one from a reputable university. They like degrees from British universities. Must be a colonial thing. |

Redeyes... take a look at the AUC Fellowship program on their website. It becomes a tuition-free MA and you get a tiny stipend.
PM me for more info.
Does AUS even have an MA in TEFL? Off to their website....
OK... they do have a program and according to their last newsletter, there were 13 students in the picture. It looks like the program started in 2005, but is still very small. They also offer Fellowships to experienced teachers who can then teach in the IEP.
I'd check to make sure that the program is accredited. Employers know the AUC program as it has been around for years.

The Aston MSc is highly regarded. For the geographically-challenged out there, that's Aston in Birmingham, England (not Alabama). |

I did mine through the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne-offered in Dubai. When I started it the course was delivered at the British Council. I thought they had set up shop elsewhere in the UAE, but couldn't find anythign in a quick Google search. |
