Hello,

I'm an American living in Korea teaching ESL currently. I have been thinking about trying to work in Spain when my contract is up next summer, in 2011. I want to plan ahead and do some research now, anyone know any good places to do that? I am planning on getting a CELTA certification next summer somewhere in Europe, possibly Ireland or Spain.

I know that without an EU passport it will be harder for me to find work, but I think my experience and the fact that I'm fluent in Spanish will work in my favor.

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

OP, you will want to google current Schengen zone laws. As you are non-EU, you have 90 days inside the zone, and then you have to leave for 90 days. This went into effect January 2009, effectively closing the old 'border run' loophole that kept non-EU teachers essentially legal in the past.

MOD EDIT

As for getting a legal job somehow - seriously unlikely. The job market's flooded with UK teachers and there's work around, but employers have little (no) incentive to go through the considerable hassle it would take to get a work permit for a non-EU citizen.

You might search earlier threads for the 'student visa' option, but I think you have to really attend uni. If you have fluent Spanish, that might be a viable option for you.

Thank you spiral and thank you moderator.

I will check out the laws you suggested.

Also have you met any people in Spain as cultural ambassadors? I was reading that some Americans can get legal visas in this capacity, to work for a year at public school.

Thanks again

Hmmm - I've forgotten what I wrote but sorry if it was something offensive Embarassed

So far as cultural ambassadors, I'm not at all sure about this. Perhaps check at the Spanish embassy website. I haven't heard of this.

I met a person last night who was working as a teaching assistant in an elementary school. Not sure how he did it but he's done two years on a legal contract.
