I have been teaching EFL for just over 5 years. My first five years, except for a one year position were typically low-paying jobs with huge discipline problems. I have worked in South Korea, the U.A.E., Oman, Kuwait, and now another GCC country which I choose not to name.
I have now obtained a very good job in terms of discipline. The students are excellent. My pay is absolutely OUTSTANDING, at least compared to most EFL jobs (at least I think so). I work for a natural gas company and teach colleagues who work for the same company.
THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM. Sometimes the number of one-on-one sessions I have are low and I only occasionally have classes of several students. I am simply BORED OUT OF MY MIND!!!!!!!!
Two questions. Do other EFL intructors in higher-ranking positions experience this? Is it normal? I teach an average of about 12 hours per week! And just to be sure I am judging my pay right, could you tell me what is considered an excellent salary in the Gulf area for EFL teachers? What is considered high monthly pay in EFL, NOT INCLUDING housing allowance or provided flats that are rent-free? OK. I LIED. I asked more than two questions. |

12 hours a week on a full salary sounds like bliss!!
Don't know about specifically EFL institutes in the Gulf, but any teacher on a 40 hour a week contract ( not 40 contact! ) should be earning nothinhg less than $ 2700 per month before allowances.
One EFL institute here in Kuwait pays part time staff 10KD per hour ( $30 ). |

Anything over 4KUS dollars a month would be considered good plus all the usual benefits.
If you are bored consider doing a masters degree or getting a hobby to keep you busy |

I am actually at work for 40 hours a week, but actual teaching is only about 12 hours. |

No kidding! sheesh!
Meorbust: If boredom is your only problem then maybe you need to hire someone to slap you around a bit and bring you out of your stupor. |
