|
|
Well, I'm moving to Thailand at last. I've been teaching English in Asia for about 8 years now, in China for the last five.
I'm not worried about a job--I'm not going to work full time. I expect to do privates wherever I end up.
Here are my questions:
1) Is there a lot of age prejudice in Thailand? I don't look too old, and I'm a popular teacher here in China.
2) How much do privates pay in Bangkok? Outside of Bangkok?
3) What's the best deal on a cell phone? |

I never found age to be a problem. I was 51 and still teaching KS1 kiddies. As long as you look smart, smile often and know what you are doing then everything should be fine.
There are too many deals around on phones and packages to list here. Look at some of the company websites for the latest deals. Most of them have an English section. The big players here are True, DTAC, Orange, AIS, 1 to Call.
Good luck on your arrival. |

1. Government schools technically won't employ teachers past 60. As for privates, I would say it won't affect you on that score and may even help you. At least teaching kids of parents who want them to have an advantage with extra language classes. An older teacher may instill confidence in some parents.
As far as hooking up with women, no worries. Probably the highest rate of gentrophilia/sugardaddyism in the world.
2. Don't ask for less than 500 baht per hour in Bangkok. Anything less and the whole situation loses its sense of occasion and importance for the people paying. Ask for more if you feel the people are quite wealthy. Can't comment accurately on outside Bangkok though I assume it could be as much as half that rate.
3. Actual phone can be had new for as low as 3-4000 baht. The Nokia no-frills. Go with DTAC for the SIM card. Lower frequency than AIS and thus no headaches. The 300 baht per month card should last you in the early going at least. I often fail to use up the full 300 and it carries over. Carry it over repeatedly and build up 1000 baht or more on your phone and they will occasionally extend your duration for a month or two so you can use it up. |

Yes. The 60 rule does not always apply to foreign teachers. |
