I am trying to make an informed decision on where to teach with Culturlingua. The options are Periban, Los Reyes, Sahuayo, and Cotija. I am looking for a city life, but maybe not quite D.F. Can someone please help. Which of these places is better. Is there a night life? Are there things to do there? How big is it? Is it easy to travel?
Thanks |

I've spent a fair amount of time in Mexico over the years and have never heard of any of the places you mention. (What state are they in?) Perhaps one of them is near a larger town, where you could find some "city life" on the weekend... |

Sahuayo is famous for being the alleged birthplace of Juan Rulfo. It's a fairly wealthy small town in a nice region not far from Guadalajara, but I imagine it could get pretty boring after a few days. I haven't heard of either of the other places you mentioned. |

Cotija is in the mountains and is/was a popular missionary area. It looks beautiful. Sahuayo is the largest with about 60,000 people, and all of them are located in Michoacan. Do some Googling for YouTube video clips. |

I spent some time in Michoacan in 2005. I don't think any of those places are going to give you "city life". sorry. If you are set on going there, choose the closed to Guadalajara and escape each weekend.
If anyone is reading this who is looking for "small town life" any of these would be a good option. |

I once spent two years living in a small city of 60,000 about an hour from Mexico City. I actually enjoyed being able to walk everywhere I wanted to go and running into friends and students on the street. But there was literally nothing to do for entertainment, not even a decent movie theater, so I escaped to the DF most weekends, where I rented a room located right in the center of things! |

As for towns between 60K and 100K in population, they can be okay if you do not need a big city. I spent lots of time in Tapachula and Comitan, in Chiapas. But teensy towns in that state, such as Port Chiapas, Arriaga, or Teopisca, would be deathly boring. I once had to go 22 km to find an ATM, and walk two km for a working pay phone. Or at Lagos de Montebello, almost an hour to get to an internet connection. But a language center is bound to be in a fair sized town. It depends how cheaply and often a good bus runs to a big city. |

Culturlingua is also found in Guadalajara...maybe after a stint in a smaller Michoacan town, you can switch to another location? |

We are building a house (nearly finished!) in Chavinda, pretty close to Sahuayo and it's a nice peaceful area, but not really for those who are looking for city life, in fact, like us, the opposite, for those who want to escape it once in a while. Zamora is an hours bus ride away - if you enjoy Space Mountain in Disney, you will enjoy that bus ride. The buses seem to date from the '50s and are driven along winding roads at breakneck speed!!
All in all, I think this area is better for someone with a car. |

Hey,
This is my first comment on Dave's, so I hope it helps. Anyway...I live in Periban Michoacan and I have been working for Culturlingua for 18 weeks. You will not find city life here or in any of the other towns you mentioned. These are all very interesting places, but you will not be able to find a beer or anything for that matter after 10:00 pm. Even on Friday night, the streets are abandoned after 10pm.
Also, If you have read any bad things about Cultutlingua elsewhere, I just want to tell you that none of them are true. Some girls here had one bad experience that was aimed at them, not the school.
