Hello all,

I'm headed for San Jose at the end of August. I'm tired of living on my own in 'teacher flats,' so I'm looking for a group house set-up like I used to see back in Seattle.

Ideally, there would be lots of arty/hip/unusual/relaxed folks in a place with cheap (and probably small) rooms and a shared kitchen, hopefully with a common/living room. I'm cool living with Ticos/expats/teachers/students/whatever. I speak basic gringo Spanish and am looking for some social interaction with my housemates.

This sound like any place you know? Any suggestions on where to look?

I'm a 24 year old American guy, if that makes a difference.

Read the Tico Times printed edition, you will always find information in it about sharing flats.

UCR also has tons of information.

One of the problems with living in CR is that you will fine most young locals will always be short of funds and not responisible when sharing expenses, although there are many exceptions.

I did do a home stay at first, a stingy experience, but it went well after I came to understand how things work. The family charged me for every minute that I used the phone, even when someone was calling me.

As a general rule, middle class Ticos must work and save hard to get ahead in life being that they are always underpaid and not treated fairly by employers.
