|
|
Hi,
I am currently in Saudi Arabia and considering workin in Oman. I noticed that a police record check was required. Does anyone know what they are looking for? Do they want a police clearance from the country that issued my passport (ie my so called 'home' country) or would a police clearance from where I now reside suffice.
Thanks |

McBrainiac,
Every time you move in or out of a ME country, these checks are made. You have to be able to show that you are not leaving your host country with debts that your ex-employer will be liable for.
It's routine, it is the way things are. Don't get paranoid, go with the flow and it will be ok.

I appreciate the reply. I guess you are implying that some kind of police check from the KSA is what the would want? |

But... I believe that this is done independent of you. Oman will do a security check on your record in the other Gulf countries.
Other than getting fingerprints done in the US in '88 (and I didn't even have to do this in 2000), I never had to provide any kind of paperwork from another country's police agency for this check. (Has this changed Duffy?)
There is rarely a problem with these... certainly not with people from another Gulf country assuming that you haven't been deported for something illegal.

I don't even remember seeing the usual "do you have a criminal record?" question on the huge form/s I had to fill out when signing up with the MoHE. Certainly no Police clearance from home country.
When in the ROP offices getting your Residence card, men have to give two thumbprints in a laser thing, once before you get the card and again when you collect it, strangely enough women have to give every fingerprint.

I never gave all my finger prints, just my thumb.
Lots have changed VS since you left. |

That is strange. I had to provide all fingerprints both times. The first time I had to bring a set from the US with so that they could 'compare' them I guess. I wonder what their reasoning is for women having to do all versus men only the thumb.
One of my favorite stories was when in the early 90's, they decided that we had to have our fingerprints re-done to get the residence visa renewed. Someone finally realized how foolish that made them look. (employers can't remember what the employee looked like and a switch could be done without notice? to catch illegal finger transplants?) They changed their minds.
Thanks for confirming how, as usual, little has changed Duffy...

In the UAE and Qatar you need to give full fingerprints, handprints and a retina scan when you first arrive. The police check is from your country of most recent residence. It just seemed strange to me that I had to go to the police station to get it and send it on to the employer - after all, couldn't I have tampered with it before I forwarded it on? Perhaps they do a follow up that I'm unaware of? |

Bring a police clearance form or letter with you before leaving your home country (just in case you need it). I did this on the advice of my employer, and just as well because the Labour Ministry required it (not sure why).
Regarding fingerprints, I went to the "cattle stalls" when I first arrived to get prints of each of my fingers (and thumb), and also when I went to uplift my resident card. This all occurred a year ago and things may have changed (as inevitably things do in Oman). |
