I have a working visa, but my wife has a dependent visa, which I am the sponsor. She got a permit to work (max. 28 hours I believe) but was told by her friend at work that she can only make a maximum of hyaku san mon yen (1,030,000 yen) a year. Does anyone know if this is true?

Since she works in a Chinese restaurant, this really doesn't add much to my "extremely" high (god, I wish) ALT position.

Just wondering if what she was told is rubbish. Just wondering if the only limit is the 28 hours a week, even if she makes 50,000 yen an hour (again, god, I wish).

Thanks!

She can make any amount possible, but there is a limit (close to the figure you cited, if not that exact one) which is the amount a person can make before you the spouse sponsor can no longer claim her as a tax exemption.

Given enough time, I could show you an official statement from the government explaining this. Am in a hurry right now.

Thanks for the info. I did some searching on the net for more info, and really came up with nothing. If you do have time, can you show me that official statement.

I guess, if she can make an extra 1000 or so yen an hour than her current job, then it is worth having her claim her own taxes, I assume, since I am in low in the tax bracket. Having her as an exemption doesn't change that much.

Thanks again for the info.

My guess also is that if she is making over a million yen a year the I think she's not really 'dependant' on you anymore, thus no longer fits the terms of her visa. Maybe she could get her own work visa.
