The recruiter named Abdul Majid Majali who was mentioned on this board extensively last year has a job ad posted on tefl.com under his name and the same job ad newly posted today on Dave's under Hawthorn Muscat. The email address and all the contact information is exactly the same. Why does this recruiter, now infamous, post under his name on tefl.com and under Hawthorn Muscat on DavesIs it perhaps because his integrity has been called into question numerous times on these forums?

Good point.

My suggestion is to try to keep this thread alive, so applicants will more easily be able to do their research.

I had done mine, supposedly, but it was not thorough enough.

People should check out the recruiters who contact them before agreeing to anything. The better jobs are found without recruiters.

I have made an observation I would like to share on this topic. One consequence of the recruiting dilemma in Oman is the high turnover of teachers based upon the kinds of individuals that show up to teach in the Ministry colleges. I have heard so many people complain about the recruiters, and when I ask, "Didn't you read the internet before you came here?" They almost always say no.
In this day and age, what kind of teacher does not use the internet? What kind of person would commit to living in such a country as Oman, and not even do some Googlin' to get some more information about life in a Middle Eastern country? I saw an incredibly high turnover rate this year and not one of the teachers I asked had ever seen any negative information about recruiters on the internet, which meant that they hadn't even looked. It's a frightening but accurate observation. It is good that people on here put the word on the street about things and people to watch out for, but unfortunately, there are still those listening to eight tracks and they will most likely show up here in September.

Sticksnstones,

I think what happens too is that those teachers who are better informed, better experienced, and better qualified *do* do their research. Poor working conditions, bad contracts, dishonest recruiters/colleges can usually only manage to hire people who have few other options--and they like it that way because those are the people who do what they are told and don't complain or stand up for themselves. Recruiters benefit when from high turnover rates because they get a finding fee for every new teacher they bring in. In the end these colleges and recruiters are both cheating the Omani government and of course the students.

I am sad to see that your other post has vanished without a trace.

Nothing against Dave's (I spend quite a bit of time here myself!), but maybe those people who didn't do their research simply do not participate in online forums or do not consider them "research." The forums do tend to get gossipy and catty, and it can be hard to distinguish a well-meant warning from a baseless complaint. What percentage of all job seekers are either members or lurkers here? Probably a very, very small percentage. I don't think that means they're sitting around listening to their 8-tracks. Maybe they just have lives... Sad

I for one would like to hear some of the pitfalls, problems, and benefits of working and living in Oman. I've accepted a job starting in September and I'm looking forward to moving there.

If anyone wants to pm me with comments that would be great.

Dear Potential Teachers,

Please read all posting and take them into serious consideration before working for this particular person Abdul Majid Majali. Anytime a comment is made about him it gets suddenly erased on this website or locked???

Ridiculous accusation.

If you do a simple search here, you will get 3 pages of posts about him... almost all negative.

No one should go to Oman without using the search to learn about the possible problems with Majali and the recruiter system in Oman.
