Lagunas de Zempoala, which is signposted off the Mexico-Cuernavaca Autopista and Parque Nacional La Marquesa, a short distance on the Mexico-Toluca Autopista are good nature spots within easy reach.
If you don't have a car, (which apparently isn't allowed by the North American Self-Appointed Environmental Police ), I think there are buses from the South (Taxquea) and West (Observatorio) bus terminals, respectively |

I recommend Malinalco, west of DF and south of Toluca. Buses from Terminal Poniente (Observatorio). Neat ruins at the Cerro de los Idolos and nice little town with good trout (trucha) dishes. |

Tepozotlan (or Tepoztlan - can never remember), is near Cuernavaca. Small pueblo with a small pyramid on top of a mountain...about 90 minutes from DF. |

Tepoztlan is the one Guy is recommending, although....
Tepozotln (exactly on the caseta of the Mxico-Quertaro Autopista) is not bad either. Take a bus from Cuatro Caminos (Toreo) Metro station. |

thanks, all.
i was wondering about renting a car--avis is offering me one all day for only $40, with the cheapest insurance included, which seems cheaper than round-trip bus tickets for two in most cases. any thoughts or advice on renting a car from the captital? |

$40??? you are talking dollars, right? In that case, I doubt that those places we've mentioned will cost you that much in busfares!
If you mean $40 MXN, then I think I'll sell my car and donate the proceeeds to Greenpeace |

That's not a bad price for a car rental, though the buses are still much cheaper. Don't forget that Mexican highways have ridiculous toll rates, and though you can take the freeways, road conditions are often poor, lengthy, and crowded. |

what of the beach? the beach is calling. whats the easiest beach to get to by bus from the df? ideally, wed like to leave early and come back late. |

Veracruz or Acapulco, but that'd be a long day. I think Veracruz is 3 1/2 hours to the beach, and Acapulco is 5 hours, each way. |

Ixtapan de la Sal. Hot mineral springs, either at the municipal pool, or the waterpark. Or stay longer and sample both. |
