What is the best way to send money home?

Banks seem to charge 7000 yen, and the post office charges around 2500 yen. Are there other options? The post office is looking like the better option.

What do the each of you do?

EVERY TOPIC has been done to death.

Don't view the board if you are going to get upset everytime someone asks a question.

Most of these are community builders anyways. You're gonna make the board dull and boring if no one can ever post a question or start a post that has been discussed an anytime in the Japan Forum board's history.

You both make good points. A lot of topics have been discussed ad nauseam, but they're not always up to date. Things do change.

To the op: I always use the post office. They even sent me a stack of pre-printed remittance forms so I don't get carpal tunnel. The post office charges 2500yen, and since I have the remittance sent to my American checking account my bank there charges me about $10. Used to be $5. The whole process takes about 6 days.

While the answers to some topics do change, this one doesn't really and gets asked so often. Answer: post office, GoLloyds, xe.com, these days all pretty similar.

I have been using GoLLoyds for years and am quite happy with it, some people have recommended xe.com's service to me recently but it doesn't really seem worth the hassle of setting it up.

If it means anything, I've been on tons of other message boards, and the long-termers usually just skip the uninteresting posts, this is one of the first forums where people not only read posts they aren't interested in, they actually post on them too complaining that they have to read it.

Funny.

There is NOWHERE that says that every member of this Forum HAS to open and post on threads they have no interest in. Just skip the thread.

By the way, thanks Apsara, I went down to the Post Office and it was no problem. Interesting how the Post Offices are more setup than the Banks all the way around with sending money back home.

Newcomers hardly ever use the search function. It's human nature to want a direct response to a question. I don't mind it, but then again I only answer questions I want to answer. I don't feel compelled to answer their questions. I guess I am more of a lurker on this (and other forums). I remember this forum a few years ago. There were more regulars, but some of those regulars were so bitter. They were waiting to pounce; if a newcomer, say, misspelled a word you would read comments like "How dare you plan on teaching English when you can't even spell!" But I have to admit I kind of liked reading the battles and flaming and one-up-manship that would sometimes result. But mainly I would shake my head and think "You're getting all worked up over an internet forum?????? Must not be much going on in your life."
