And please don't tell me to h.ll Crying or Very sad .

Background: B.Sc. Sociology (U.S.), CELTA (British Council), MATEFL (U.K.), 10 years experience (7 years post-CELTA, 3 years post-MA, last 2 years at tertiary-level, past year in Middle East teaching teacher-training courses at teacher-training college).

Needs/wants: Good to very good salary to cost-of-living ratio; prefer lower cost of living despite lower salary, to stretch existing savings. No primary/secondary schools; no small children, in any setting. First choice, teacher training (any setting); second choice, on-site business/corporate EFL; third choice, general adult EFL; fourth choice, tertiary-level (uni) EFL. Hours of work not important.

The Middle East meets my foregoing criteria, but the crux of the matter is that it lacks my "must have" in a place to live: a social life for a single man in his early 50's.

Thailand seems like the obvious choice, but the salary to cost of living ratio is not favorable enough. South Korea comes to mind, but several acquaintenances have told me it's very lonely for "fiftyish" single men (a lot of boozing with colleagues). Taiwan? Indonesia? Latin America (which country/city?)? Eastern Europe (again, which country/city - and non-EU passport?)?

Just looking for ideas based on others' experience...

Where in the Middle East are/were you, and what sort of social life are you looking for? I teach in Oman, and it really seems like it's not geared towards young/youngish (20s-30ish) singles. People are older and/or married with kids.

I think the key to the answer is that you want to socialize? Who do you want to meet?

If you want casual relationships with younger women then Thailand is still the best bet as far as I know, but I havent been to S AMerica.

Unless you get into schools or teacher training in Latin Ammerica, you aren't going to make a lot of money.

Thanks for your reply! Salary's not really the issue - salary vs. cost of living is much more relevant. Any suggestions based on that?
