Has anybody read First Stop in the New World by David Lida? It just came out on June 12th...looks like an interesting read. I'm curious to see what some of you long-term Mexico City residents think...
...just one week until I move there! So excited! |

Dang you! My wish list just won't stop growing. I doubt we will find it here, probably will have to order it online. |

If the author is a long-term resident of Mexico City and a good writer to boot, interested members of this forum could read and discuss this book on-line. Was it originally written in Spanish or English? Its intended audience would make a big difference in its content and focus. |

It looks to me like it was originally written in English--on his website, he mentions he has also published one book in Spanish. As for its purpose...I think that remains to be seen.
I think I'll try to get a copy before I leave the States...if people here are interested, maybe we can pass it around so that you guys don't have to go to the trouble of finding it or having it shipped in. |

That's a very generous offer. In any event, we look forward to welcoming you to our fair city. Will you be here for our trip to the zoo on July 5? |

I wish I could go, but my parents are coming with me to help me move in, so I'm not sure if the timing will work out. I'll definitely make it to the next DF get-together, though! |

We should make the next get together a book club sort of thing...maybe do it over at El Pendulo? MO and I and a few others already exchange books regularly...the more the merrier. |

I was thinking the same thing myself, Guy. We could talk about the latest books we've read and maybe pick one to discuss at a later meeting, either in person or on-line. |

Sounds good to me...I just picked this one up today. I think I'm going to save it for the plane ride... |

If the author is living in Mexico City, does anybody know him? Why not invite him personally to one of these gatherings, and perhaps he has copies of his book he could make available, instead of trying to get them shipped from the U.S.
Just a thought. |

Just read the review - it sounds like this book is an entertaining, anecdotal portrait of the D.F., rather than a serious analysis. I did discover one "mistake" (there's that annoying tendency of mine to proofread every text I read) - the author was irked by the supposedly insulting custom of calling all male waiters "joven" (which he translated as "boy"), but it really means "young man", doesn't it? |

I agree; joven as an address is "young man," and is a casually respectful way to address someone. If anything, it could be slightly flattering to address a man of uncertain years as though he were young. |

I'm pretty sure I first heard about this book after following some links someone had posted here... It was on someone's blog or something. I think the author has been seen around here, but not recently... |

Despite everyone telling me that it's flattering, it's one form of address that I'll never get used to! , |
