I'll be in San Jose by end of July and since i have not travelled to Latin America before, i'm not certain abt what is the best way to carry money around. I will be staying with 2 Ticos i know from MNC i worked for previously.
Would traveller's cheque be practical? or plain old wad of cash would do? |

In a money belt or in your shirt breast pocket. Travellers checks not that useful. USD accepted everywhere. Also, ATM cards work in many banks. Best to take an extra ATM card if you can. |

Best thing is not to carry a wad of cash. You can cash Travelers checks at a bank with your passport. I use 2 different debit cards and never carry both at the same time or in the same pocket. Always put your wallet in your front pocket...not to scare you but a little awareness and preventions really pays off down here. |

Just carry, in cash, whatever you need for whatever you are planning on doing, plus one of your debit/credit cards in a front pocket. You'll be fine as long as you don't hang out alone in shady areas, don't worry. |

CR is not that bad, if you are worried, carry an extra cheap wallet that you use when you go out with 20 bucks in it |

I'm about to sound VERY NIEVE, but it's cause I am. What is the need for TWO ATM cards? Wouldn't they both be the same? Is it so you can run to the bank the moment you realize that someone has lifted one of them and see what's left? |

Having a spare is always a good thing. ATM cards wear out and sometimes can't be read by a machine. You may lose one or your wallet may be pinched. Same goes with your passport and visa (for CR the page with your entry stamp.) I always have a back up laminated color copy and a scanned version I have e-mailed to myself in case it gets lost (CR allows you to present a copy of you passport/travel visa if asked so you can leave your orignal in a safe place when travelng or going about daily life.) |

Making copies of your paperwork (passport) is a very good idea when you are living or traveling in a country that is not yours. |
