Do you know any good websites/resources for teaching "ESL Literacy"? I've been hired by the local public school board to teach high school Language Arts full-time, but they don't have any Language Arts positions available so I'm just killing time (on payroll, of course!). One of the "make work" projects I've been doing is filling in for an ESL teacher who didn't show up at the very last minute (as in, the first day of school started, the bell rang and she wasn't there so I unlocked the classroom door and took it from there!). I didn't even have a copy of her timetable so I hadn't realized one of her classes is for students who can't read and write (most had no formal schooling in their home countries and have been in Canada for less than two years). The students already spend two periods a day in a proper literacy class, and the class I'm covering is supposed to help prepare them to take elective classes like Art and PE next semester. I'm at a loss for things to do with them, there is no curriculum and the school/department doesn't have a plan for the course either. I don't want to start anything long-term because I'm hoping to have a proper position by next Monday (or two weeks from now at the latest). Help! |
