|
|
Hi,
I have a young basic student who is obsessed with soccer. He want's to learn English to follow UK teams (a potential hooligan no doubt)
Being a Yank, I don't follow soccer preferring the more manly American version of football (calmate - I'm joking again)
Can anyone help me with a basic reading or lesson incorporating soccer?
Thanks for your help and understanding of my cultural sports deprivation. |

This page should get you up to scratch with the game. As for a basic reading, I will investigate.
You should know a few inane clichs regularly used by British footballers in interviews:
(After a win) "I'm over the moon"
(After a defeat) "I'm as sick as a parrot"
(There's a long way to go in the game) "It's early doors"
Guide to top English teams:
Manchester United: At the top for 50 years with a few wobbles along the way. Current Premier League Champions and European Champions. Coach (know as "manager" in England), Sir Alex Ferguson has an unprecedented 22 years in charge.
Chelsea: Never really did anything for years, until Russian billionaire Roman Abromavich bought the club a few years ago and now wallowing in money and winning a few things.
Liverpool: Swept all before them in the 70s and 80s, now the "nearly men", although European champions a few years back.
Arsenal: More nearly men with a glittering history.
Honorary mention:
Manchester City: Even more "nearly", but relevant fact is that new Mexico coach, Sven Gran Eriksson left this team last year after one season as coach. |

If he's a real enthusiast he, and anyone else here who is into their English footy, are welcome to joining the Fantasy Premier League I set up each year.
http://fantasy.premierleague.com
Make up a team, and then click to Join a league. The code for mine is 282290-65095
It is also possible to download Match of the Day - BBC's weekly highlights programme. You'll have to PM me for details on that if you don't know already how BitTorrent works. |

im a big football/ soccer fan i support the one and only Man United,
I use to play football myself it might be an idea to explain different formations or where a player plays e.g down the wing, centre, etc As that is important to understand in football there
Examples of football teams in UK are
Manchester United-
Chelsea
Arsenal
Liverpool
Everton
Look at this website it will help , it has tones of information they sponsor the premier league

I'm nowhere near what you would call a football fan, but I am going to the America - Santos game this afternoon, which will be the first match I've attended in my 8 years in Mexico (a possible crime, yes). Any research I can offer on this topic for a lesson?
This should be fun, even if it isn't hockey. |
