We're moving to Kuwait at the end of the summer to work in Hawalli Kuwait.... Housing is free and is in either Mahboulah or Mangaf. I read this is a 1/2hr drive from Hawalli.
My question....we can opt for a KD150 housing allowance instead, would it be possible to find an apartment in Hawalli for KD150 so as to avoid a long drive every day? |

You don't want to live in Hawalli- not nice and you woudn't find a flat for 150KD. You should take the money and you might find one in Salmiya for about 250. But if there are two of you, why are you only getting 150KD allowance???
You should be getting at least 100KD each and if you aren't, I reiterate, don't take the job.
Fintas + Mahboula is 20 minutes drive, 30 minutes in traffic.
If it is KNES you are going to....................don't take the job.
If it is CES or BBS .............ok!
PM me if you like. |

I agree with Miski. Avoid living in Hawalli. It does have its charms such as the Deek al Roumi restaurant but Hawalli is clogged with traffic and noise.
If I returned to Kuwait I would go for Fintas, Mahboula, Abu Halifa or Mangaf. Maybe even Fahaheel. |

Hawally is a dump. Most of the schools there are crap. There is a good chance you will regret your decision to go there.
Remember the lady who had the travel ban last year? She worked in Hawally. I personally know another person who had a travel ban who worked at another school in Hawally. It happens all the time.
I worked at a school in Hawally. Just to give you a flavour of the place - the owner had one employees bank account frozen when he 'thought' he might be leaving. If you do a runner you must not tell anyone, and you must not stay in the country after leaving your employer. If discovered, you can be stopped, arrested and jailed in any of the gulf countries. |

The Oracle...............CSB..........
Don't listen Hawalli isn't a ''dump'', it has developed over the past two years ( since Canadashirley has gone ) but still needs improvement.
As I said BBS- Al Bayan Bilingual School is there and is an excellent school- the teacher who had problems last year with a travel ban was given the full support of her school in extracating herslef from the situation. The travel ban had been put on her by a rich parent , not the school.
CES- Cambridge English School has mostly native speaking staff which is good, a quite sound Principle with good ideas and a large amount of Egyptian kids ( who always work hard)
KNES is to be avoided at all costs.
But all this is irrelevent as we have discovered that the original poster is in fact not IN Hawalli but it is just the P.O.Box of the school!
PS- Canada Shirley- when exactly were you last in Kuwait? |

Hawally is not a dump. Looks no different than most places in Kuwait.
"Most of the schools are crap"? What schools are you talking about?
I, too, worked at a school in Hawally and it was a great experience.

She worked at Al-Bayan, one of the most well-respected schools in Kuwait.

Hmm, I"ve worked in Kuwait for 5 years and I've yet to hear of anyone who was arrested for opting out of their contract.
I would definitely opt for the company housing. 150 isn't going to get you much and you still have to locate and buy furniture. You plan on coming a few weeks early? It's gonna take that long to do all that.
Take the housing for the first year. Save your $$ and if you don't like the place you live, move out next year. Save yourself the headache. You're going to need your sanity for adjusting to life in Kuwait. |

maiden hawalli is across 3 from hawalli and frequently confused with hawalli - it's nice there - many apartments near police station, AIS and now within view of 30
the traffic at night is bad
but right, hawalli is the pits
the cheapest housing is a mo-hawk (a studio apartment in the back of a house which is not connected to the house)
scan local free papers
i must know 5 kuwaiti families in rumithaya who have expats in their mo-hawks |
