Because I've gotten this story a couple of times. Schools are eager to hire, OK, but get to the part where you discuss changing the invitation letter to a Z visa, and "sorry, you have to go to your home country this year." All I can determine is to read the Chinese page on the subject.
Help. I wasn't planning on this kind of trip, can't do it.

The government sites are not that good! Here is one of the better sites:

Teaching English in China

Many Americans have enjoyed their teaching experience in China; others have encountered significant problems. Some Americans travel to China under a contract with promises of good salary, bonuses and other amenities, only to find themselves in tenuous situations often lacking funds to return to the United States. The U.S. Embassy cannot act as a legal advisor or negotiate business or personal grievances on behalf of individual citizens.
Americans experiencing problems can contact the Embassy's American Citizens Services Unit at telephone (86-10) 6532-3431, extension 5648, 5028, 5609 or 5344,
or via e-mail to [email protected] to report problems with school employment contracts.

True enough -- I just read through it but frankly it covers everything that has been covered here on Dave's again and again. I found the Z visa information to be rather cursory, though. |
